If you’re very careful you can scrape away the coating, but you need to watch out as you can easily damage the panel. A lot of times these have a coating over every exposed contact to prevent corrosion and this can making solder near impossible. There are two areas to solder on the rear of the panels and these can be a huge pain. The construction is amazingly bad in most of these lamps and I’m amazed they can charge people so much for a set. Looking at the back of one you can see the hot glue that held it in place. Keep in mind of couse they don’t have huge outputs, you can wire them together if you get a bunch should you need too. The solar panels aren’t amazing on their own, but they do their job well and are usually the most expensive component in these lights. Removing the solar panels from these lights is easy as the cases usually only snap together and the panels are almost always hot glued in (these are built incredibly cheap).

Why do I bring them up though? Because you can get these free wehn people toss a bunch into the garbage as they replace them and do you know what they have? Solar Panels. These are the cheapest batteries you can imagine and it shows based on how fast they die.
The rechargeable batteries they put in them are almost always 1.2V AA sized batteries. You know those fancy solar lights people put up and down their driveways? The style of those things changes every spring and people rush out to buy new ones, but on top of that they are all but designed to fail after a season. The main problem is that buying solar panels of any size can be really expensive, but it doesn’t have to be. I love Solar Panels, they’re great things that I like to build into projects because they can be used in so many things.
